Lesson 4 - The 'scramble' for Africa & Cecil Rhodes
Lesson 4 - The 'scramble' for Africa & Cecil Rhodes
A lesson about the scramble for Africa plus a bonus lesson on the significance of Cecil Rhodes. This is lesson 4 in my series of lessons on British Empire. This lesson is easily two lessons worth, however the last part on Cecil Rhodes and Rhodesia can be omitted to keep it at one lesson.
Students will complete a series of tasks that examine hwy Africa was so important to the British. Students will look at how Africa was divided up under The Berlin Conference and the response to this. Via a storyboard dtask Students will have the opportunity to add their own understanding to how the British Empire grew in Africa. This lesson then goes on to look at who Cecil Rhodes was and his actions which led to protests over his statue. The lesson then ends on a judgement as to whether British colonisation in Africa was a force for good.
All of my lessons are designed to last at least 60 minutes, however they can be adapted to fit the ability of your class.
